CLASS SCHEDULES:  Classes are offered both in the morning/afternoon and in the evening, on a Full-time and/or on a Part-time basis.

Class hours are as follows:


WEEKDAY CLASSES

501 hour morning/afternoon class meets from 9:00 A. M. until 3:00 P. M.
501 hour evening class                    meets from 5:00 P. M. until 10:00 P. M., 

501 hour full-time students are expected to attend 4 times per week.

501 hour part-time students are expected to attend at least 2 times per week.
 

900 hour morning/afternoon class meets from 9:00 A. M. until 4:00 P. M.
900 hour evening class                    meets from 5:00 P. M. until 10:00 P. M.

900 hour full-time students are expected to attend 5 times per week.
 


900 hour part-time students are expected to attend at least 5 times every 2 weeks, or 10 times every 4 weeks [twice one week and three times the next week]

All part-time students must attend at least one full class/lecture day of the week and also attend at least one full clinical day of the week. These 2 days must be between Wednesday and Friday. In other words, students cannot attend on Mondays or Tuesday as one of their regularly scheduled required class or clinical days. Mondays may be elected to fulfill the extra 2 required days of the month.


CURRICULUM FOR 900 HOUR MASSAGE THERAPY PROGRAM: 
MTA 101 - ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY (minimum 175 hours)1. Textbook study with lecture covering cellular structure through all organ systems of the body.  2. Clinical importance of massage.  3. Extensive study of musculoskeletal system, i.e., bone and muscle functions and identification.    In addition to classroom lectures, students will have “hands-on” practice locating, palpating and identifying bones, boney landmarks, muscles and joints. 
4. Medical vocabulary. 

PFM 101 - PATHOLOGY FOR MASSAGE (minimum 50 hours)
  1. Study of the pathology of different body systems with emphasis on the musculoskeletal system. 
2. C. P. R. for the Health Care Professional.  3. Significance of diseases and trauma to massage. In addition to classroom lecture and study of these conditions, we will teach actual massage sessions designed for many of these conditions, such as (but not limited to): 
a. frozen shoulder; rotator cuff injuries            b. sciatica;             c. Low Back Pain;           
d. swimming injuries;          e. golfer’s elbow; tennis elbow; carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.            f. fibromyalgia            g. headaches            h. TMJD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) 


BTM 102 - BASIC MASSAGE THEORY AND PRACTICAL INSTRUCTION (minimum 225 hours)
Includes training in Health and Safety.1. General principles of massage, i.e., draping, positioning, lubricants, confidentiality, etc.    This includes classroom lecture and actual practice sessions.  2. Basic massage strokes - five (5), and many variations of each manipulation and/or technique.    Students will learn not only how to apply the strokes, but will learn when, where and why to do so. Several massage routines will be shown and practiced. 3. Indications and contraindications, endangerment sites. This includes classroom lecture and     actual “hands-on” practice locating endangerment sites and boney landmarks to identify these     sites  4. Joint movements.  5. Stroke approach to different parts of the body.  6. Therapeutic and physiological effects.  7. Health and Safety.  
 
Examples of Massages and Massage Routines/Protocols taught may include (but are not limited to):                       
A.  Swedish/Spa Massage [the basis for everything else]   B.  4-Hand Massage [the equivalent of a 2 hr massage but performed in one hour by  two therapists working simultaneously on the same client]    C.  Barefoot Deep Tissue Massage [the deepest and most effective massage possible]       Your hands are not designed for the deep, constant pressure required for massage, but, your feet are! Learn why clients are insisting on this special massage.  D.  Massage protocol for Migraine headaches            E.  Massage protocol for Tension Headaches       F.  Massage protocol for Fibromyalgia G.  Massage protocol for TMJ disorders       H.  Massage protocol for Tennis Elbow     I.  Massage protocol for Golfer’s Elbow       J.  Massage protocol for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome       K. Massage protocol for Plantar Fascitis (heel pain)    


SCP 103 - STUDENT CLINICAL PRACTICUM (minimum 265 hours) 

  1. Clinical practice of all modalities taught during the course, both in the Basic Massage and in Allied Modalities
  2. Students practice will include (but not be limited to) the following:
    1. Neuromuscular Therapy
    2. Myofascial Release
    3. Muscle Energy Techinques
    4. Active Isolated Stretching
    5. Barefoot Deep Tissue Massage
    6. Protocols for many conditions (see above/previous page)

 MAM 104 - ALLIED MODALITIES (minimum 125 hours) 1. Lecture and demonstrations given by both our staff and by guest Allied Health care professionals to expose the students to post graduate studies available, as well as student practice in these areas. This consists of approximately 60 class hours and 65 practice/clinic hours.  Examples of subjects that may be covered include (but are not limited to):A.    Reflexology   B.Neuromuscular Therapy  C. Structural Integration     D. Applied Kinesiology     E. Acupressure   F. Aromatherapy
G. Sports Massage     H.Flexibility     I. Exercise      J. Physiology of Massage
K. Active Isolated Stretching     L. Hot Stone Massage    M. On-Site Massage


FSR 105 - FLORIDA STATUTES/RULES (minimum 10 hours)
  1. Study and review of chapter 480 Florida Statutes and 64B7 Florida Administrative Code.The State of Florida governs professional massage therapy through the Department of Health and the Florida Board of Massage Therapy.   

HTP 106 - THEORY AND PRACTICE OF HYDROTHERAPY (minimum of 15 hours)
1. Indications and contraindications of the application of heat and cold.  2. Local and systemic effects of heat and cold.  3. Proper use of equipment and protective draping for clients. 
4. Textbook study and practical demonstrations, including (but not limited to):   
A.  Paraffin baths   B.  Hot packs and cold packs
C.  Eye compresses       D.  Foot soaks/baths
 

MME 107 - MASSAGE MEDICAL ERRORS PREVENTION (minimum 2 hours)
1. This course is designed to teach therapists how to perform massage manipulations and techniques in a safe manner, preventing harm to the client, as well as identifying and avoiding endangerment sites. 

HIV 108 - AIDS/HIV EDUCATION (minimum 3 hours)
  1. History and technical background information on AIDS.  2. Transmission of the virus.  3. Symptoms of infection and treatment.  4. Counseling and testing for HIV.  5. Preventing and counseling infection.  6. Legal and ethical issues. 

BAM 109 - BUSINESS ASPECTS OF MASSAGE (minimum of 20 hours)
[Includes Leadership/Human Relations] 

  1. Types of business structures.
  2. How to write a business plan.
  3. How to design business cards and brochures.
  4. How to prepare informed consent forms.
  5. Marketing.
  6. How to choose and work with target markets.

 EOM 101 - ETHICS OF MASSAGE (minimum of 10 hours)



Seated/On-site/Chair Massage Certification    This training requires some tools, such as 4 footed “happy face” massager; knobble; index knobber; magic cloth, etc.,to be purchased/provided by the student.  Chair 1 consists of the following:

  1. (1 hour) Setting up, adjusting and folding up the chair (at least 2 different models/makes, such as Oakworks; CustomCraftworks; Stronglite.
  2. (1/2 hour) Pre-massage instructions, health histories and informed consent.
  3. (2 1/2 hour) Basic 10 minute stress relief routine.
  4. (2 hour) Basic 15 minute stress relief routine.

  Chair 2 consists of the following:

  1. (1 hour) Marketing tips.
  2. (1 hour) Neck massage techniques.
  3. (1 hour) Shoulder massage techniques.
  4. (1 hour) Headache techniques.
  5. (1 hour) Carpal Tunnel techniques.
  6. (1 hour) Stretches.

Barefoot Deep-Tissue classes  -  Requires 2 queen or king size pillows for all courses, to be provided by the student. Overhead support/bar system will be provided by the school.  Barefoot Basics 1 (6 hours) – [one footed strokes on the table] - explanations; contraindications; indications; table etiquette; basic posterior upper body strokes; shoulder & neck techniques.  Barefoot Basics 2 (6 hours) – [one footed strokes on the table] - basic posterior hip and lower body strokes; rocking; stretching.  Barefoot Basics 3 (6 hours) – [one footed strokes on the table] - review and practice  #1 & #2; work on smoothness and flow, and blend individual strikes into a routine.  Barefoot 4 Advanced (6 hours) – [anterior body strokes]
