In 2010 I walked into Alpha School of Massage for the first time as an employee. I had visited several times before as a client, but this was different. I didn’t want to be there whereas I desperately wanted to be there as a client. Who doesn’t? I had spent 18 years in the real-estate business and felt as if I was leaving something behind prematurely. I quickly fell in love with the place though. The staff, the clients, the students, and especially the program by which students could graduate debt-free and pay just $99 monthly while they were enrolled became my reason for thriving there. I couldn’t wrap my head around the program early on. The largest competitor at the time was charging over $21,000 to attend their massage program. Alpha’s students were graduating with less than $2,000 invested. Surely, they had to be undertrained, or not receiving the same credentials. So, I researched and verified that indeed they were qualified and receiving the proper credentials. They received excellent training and were as qualified, and I believe more qualified than those who had paid 10 times as much. Prices in our area have since dropped, I credit Alpha with that, but our graduates, in my opinion, are still the best. They continue to get excellent training and graduate with under $2,000 invested, in most cases.
I’m no longer only an employee at Alpha. The debt-free program lit a fire in me that drove me to purchase the school many years after going to work there. My father had built a relationship with the owner, Dr. Gilbert Weise that made the purchase easier than it should have been. I’m very grateful for that. I’ve plunged toilets, cleaned up floods (thank you Hurricane Irma), and everything you can imagine. Including everything no one told you was part of owning a massage school. Looking back, I love it all. It’s made me a better person than I was the day I walked in 2010 as an employee.
Several years ago, Alpha began working with spas in our area. We reached out to them, educated them on what we do, and invited them to get to know our students. Since then, they have become a major conduit for our graduates to enter the profession. We have helped many spas fill rooms with highly qualified Licensed Massage Therapists. I smile when I think of all the great people they have helped in their treatment rooms across the city, our state, and even in other parts of the country now. I know of graduates as far away as Washington state and dozens of states between here and there.
The spas are only one segment of the industry that we serve. Chiropractors, resorts, wellness centers, and entrepreneurs all benefit from what we do at Alpha. Everyone who needs to employ great therapists in our area knows to reach out to Alpha and we do our best to help them all, but I’ve never seen a need as we have now in 2021. I’ve never, in the 11 years I have been involved, witnessed a time where so many jobs are available. Clients have returned post-Covid in a way no one expected. I certainly didn’t. I believe the social distancing and the cries to stay isolated made people realize how important touch is. People need people. People need to feel cared for. People need to be touched. We are wired for it.
This rush back to Massage Spas, and for many their first visit, has revealed a major deficit in the number of available professionals. The health and wellness industry needs a huge batch of new faces with a desire to help people. It’s more than just a feeling, I’m hearing from every contact I have and from some I didn’t have pre-Covid. I’m getting calls from across the country to see if we can help. On top of that, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms what the industry feels. The market is growing, and jobs are multiplying.
The employment of massage therapists is projected to grow 21 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. Demand will likely increase as more healthcare providers understand the benefits of massage and these services become part of treatment plans.
